The nine-month rule for a booster dose has created a lot of confusion, especially for those traveling abroad. Initially, the immunization centers did not ask the individual to produce any travel documents. However, the centers in Maharashtra are now planning to check for proof produced by the recipient, especially under one of the grounds stated by the Centre. Though the State or the Corporation Health Department has not released any directives regarding this issue.

The Centre on May 12th allowed the administration of booster shots after 3 months before the second dose. This change in the time frame from 9 months to a shorter period was only applicable if mandated in the guidelines of the destination country. The Union Health Ministry issued a circular stating that people traveling for education purposes, employment opportunities, sports participation, and Bilateral/Unilateral meeting as a part of an Indian official Delegation are eligible for the 3rd jab.

This rule undermined the need to upload any documents on the COWIN portal namely visa and travel documents. This change in rules has created a quandary as several people have expressed their doubts such as confirmation of travel reasons provided by the center, any verification of the travel plan itself, or applicability of the rule for those traveling for leisure.
